The Forgotten Power of Rhythm: Ta Ke TI Na
by Reinhard Flatischler
Modern Drummer
To many musicians, rhythm is something that is done by
the hands and/or feet, representing mathematical divisions. But as
Reinhard Flatischler makes clear in this engrossing study, rhythm is an
internal force that exists in the foundations of life (breathing and
heartbeat) and is best experienced through movement and vocal sounds. One
quickly discovers that being able to feel rhythm through the entire body
gives musical performance (especially drumming) a great deal of conviction.
The book combines historical and cultural information about rhythm with
exercises designed to make one more aware of rhythmic pulse land
subdivison. Some of the material is based around the Indian system of
assigning syllables to different subdivisions. Singing "ta ke ti na"
may seem exotic at firsts, but it's not all that different than counting
"1 e & A" except that it proves to be more sophisticated,
especially with groupings such as five and seven, in which the Western
counting system falls apart. Flatiscshler's exercises help one discover
the character aof different subdivisions as opposed to the mere arithmetic
involved. The corresponding CD gives relevant examples of the subjects
discussed in the book..All are enlightening.

Lessons With the Greats: Drums
by J ohn Xepoleas,
Steve
Smith, Peter Erskine
From
Library Journal
The drummer is one of the jazz band's most
important members, providing the energy, pulse, and drive that
can make or break a unit. Korall illuminates these points and
more in his latest offering, a fine follow-up to his Drummin'
Men: The Heartbeat of Jazz; The Swing Years, which was
published in 1990. A jazz authority whose writings have
appeared in such publications as the New York Times, Modern
Drummer, and the Village Voice, Korall is also a jazz drummer
and can thus talk knowledgeably about various stylistic
aspects of drumming. As in his previous work, he uses
interviews with musicians to address various key artists and
concepts. It's hardly surprising that drummers Art Blakey, Max
Roach, Kenny Clarke, and Roy Haynes are included, but the
unexpected coverage of artists like Tiny Kahn, Stan Levey,
Shadow Wilson, and Don Lamond provide diversity and a greater
understanding of how bop drumming evolved. While there is some
overlap between the two books, Korall's latest offering is no
carbon copy. It is a readable tome that would appeal to jazz
enthusiasts and jazz scholars alike. Recommended for academic
and public libraries with a jazz interest. Ronald S. Russ,
